Sprint iPhone Finally in the Works
Coming out of 9to5mac, sources are stating the Sprint iPhone is in advanced testing stages on the Sprint CDMA network. There are numerous parts going into the advanced testing including using Sprint cell towers on the Apple campus. Apple did a similar exercise with a Verizon cell tower months before the Verizon iPhone release so it is no surprise to see this happening. Further testing involves making passes through the various departments at Sprint to ensure everything is working properly. All of this is unverified by any “official” source, so it probably should be taken with a grain of salt.
It is interesting to hear, however, the Sprint iPhone is being passed through the company. One would expect some sort of leak with numerous people getting their hands on the Sprint iPhone. A camera picture similar to the T-Mobile iPhone shot, internal memo, something, anything to give more the story more creditability. Maybe the weight of this story does increase if you include Apple’s job posting in Kansas City (Sprint Headquarters) for a Carrier Engineer to see a product through “technical approval.” (via Stop It, AT&T.) from a couple months ago. Rumors at the time speculated that since it came from Apple, it was most likely involved with a Sprint iPhone.
9to5mac also states the Sprint iPhone will not have 4G LTE and most likely be based on the current iPhone 4. No real surprise here seeing Apple just released the iPhone 4 in many countries such as India. However, iPhone 5 rumors (or iPhone 4S) have been running strong lately and Sprint could very easily get the iPhone 4S if Apple decides to make a mid-term release. Another interesting note out of the 9to5mac article is the reference to the Sprint iPhone having dual-band support to include T-mobile (via TalkAndroid). Huh? While the dual-band, iPhone rumors have been around for a while now, it’s interesting to see a Sprint T-Mobile dual-band iPhone get thrown in the mix. Somewhat doubtful. But, it does give T-Mobile user more hope to see an iPhone coming to T-Mobile. More speculation exists about what the iPhone will be called…an iPhone 4, 4S or even an iPhone 5? Again, it goes back to the mid-term release and if Sprint and T-Mobile can get the business end sorted out. If all of this happens, it is likely we will see an iPhone 4S release date come September.
There is no doubt that both Sprint and T-Mobile want to hop on the iPhone bandwagon. Sprint continues to fall behind AT&T and Verizon, while T-Mobile is in the process of getting bought out by AT&T. Sprint will have the most to lose if they do not carry the iPhone by not being able to sell the most popular smartphone currently on the market. Further if the AT&T buyout of T-Mobile passes regulatory approval, a Sprint iPhone will be a must if the company wants to remain competitive. However, if there rumors come true, all major networks will carry the iPhone and that means an iPhone for anyone who wants it.
