ESPN Live Streams Now Available on Android

Earlier, we reported on ESPN’s live streaming app called WatchESPN.  The app streams all of the ESPN’s content to any iOS device such as the iPhone, however at the time, Android users were left out in the cold.  That has all changed with ESPN’s release of WatchESPN on the Android Marketplace but there are still major drawbacks.  First, it is not available for the Honeycomb version tablets and your device needs to be on Android 2.2 and up to run the app. Total bummer for tablet users. Secondly, you need to download Adobe Air for the app to stream to your Android device properly.  Not a big deal but it’s one more thing to download and install.  Lastly, the same rules still apply for the iPhone version, only subscribers to Bright House Networks, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon FIOS TV are granted access to use the streams and Verizon FIOS internet service subscribers can only stream ESPN3.  Currently, the app is receiving mediocre reviews on the Android Marketplace with most people complaining about lack of support for their device and major bugs.  WatchESPN is still worth a try since it is free if you are a subscriber on the afore mentioned cable companies.  Hopefully, ESPN will release an update fixing some of the bugs, allow for tablet (and all Android device) support, and most importantly, allowing streaming for all cable subscribers.
